As I am approaching my third wedding anniversary in a few weeks, I thought it could be fun to discuss music rituals in American weddings. I actually think some of our traditions are quite odd if you put much thought into them (looking at you, garter toss).
A lot of thought, discussion, debate, and sleepless nights went into picking out the music for the wedding. The wedding was a country setting, but I really wanted the music to shake things up a bit. I did not want it to feel sleepy or slow, but rather lively and upbeat. After all, our wedding was the biggest celebration of our lives!
My husband and I did have some traditional music at our wedding. We also added a little of our own flair. My husband did his first dance with his mother to "A Song for Mama" by Boyz II Men.
The song would not have been my first choice, but the dance my husband had with his mom was actually probably one of my favorite memories of the day. They looked so sweet together and I think that they both really enjoyed that moment. We have a photo from their dance on the wall that the whole family loves. I didn't realize how amazing that tradition was until we were in the moment, and that is definitely a tradition that I love now.
We also played "Let's Get Married" by Jagged Edge when the groomsmen and bridesmaids walked down the aisle. It added a little spice for sure to our quaint little country wedding in the mountains. I think people were definitely not expecting it.
Music helped us set the tone for our wedding. My husband and I both had strong opinions about what music we wanted included. My husband pretty much let me go wild and plan everything anyway that I wanted to- except the music. Music really makes or breaks your wedding.
As the wedding guests started thinning out, the DJ started taking requests from the kids. We experienced the expected requests of "Baby Shark" and other typical child favorites. And then my nephew, Jacob, walked up to the DJ and requested "Train" by ACDC (he loves trains and he is just a pretty cool kid).
Needless to say, the kids definitely had as much fun as the adults did, if not more. It was a beautiful day. The weather was perfect, the music was great, and we got to spend the day with everyone we loved in the same place.

Hey Lyn! I enjoyed reading about the music you chose for your wedding. I like how you and your husband intersected your musical views in order to come up with the perfect mix of music.
ReplyDeleteHey! I like that you shared the type of music you played at your wedding, I think it fits very well as it is cheerful, romantic and relaxing at the same time. I really like the first song "A Song for Mama" by Boyz II Men.
